Deb Casey
I have had a seasoned career developing art projects which advocate for socially and economically marginalized members of our society, navigating bureaucracy to improve conditions and promote change. This passion is now the catalyst for the conceptual works I create. Unfettered by institutional constraints I now have a voice which is uncensored in subject and narratives.
Enrolment into the Graduate Certificate of Visual Arts at VCA 2012 presented the opportunity to explore the construction of installations. I usually work with only a few elements to create simple structures to address complex ideas. Materials used include recycled, deconstructed, moulded, welded, found materials and more recently film.
My intention is to create conceptual works which highlight contemporary global issues. Subjects explored include death, gender, war, religion, obesity and cultural diversity.Recent residencies in Berlin and Varanasi provided the inspiration for the Indian video installation, I thought you were different. This work filmed over a 6 week period captures the cultural diversity and my sense of the ordinary and being the "Other" in Varanasi. Recently the installation 'NoVaxNoEntry" is a conceptual response
to the global crisis and social change during the COVID-19 pandemic.
